On the 18th we took Ludi for a dressage lesson at Canyon Creek Farm with Grand Prix rider Ozwaldo Lazurri. My recent lessons with Gina and Eddo transposed into more fantastic work of gently asking Ludi to carry himself with more elevation. He got right to it!
This blog entry has actually spilled into September. Early in the month we received Miss Elsa Marie, a young Clydesdale / Thoroughbred cross mare to be started under saddle. Her owners had done all the prep work for me and I was faced with a well-loved, calm and friendly mare who already knew how to longe and wear her tack. She’s the 16th horse I’ve started under saddle, and I was sitting on her 2 days after she arrived. Three weeks later she took her owner for a perfectly lovely long trail ride. Ehren helped me cross another line off my Goals list. I signed him up for two Set Speed rides at the Cala-Boogie Endurance Event on August 31-September 1. The hills of Calabogie matched my steep learning curve for the sport of Competitive Trail Riding, but everyone I met at the event was so helpful and ensured we completed. Ehren showed his natural athleticism and good spirit. We achieved Grade 2 for both rides, and I am floored that I could have gone even faster for better results; we were either blasting or power-walking those gorgeous trails! 17kms on Saturday and 19kms on Sunday, then he was my guy yesterday morning to lead Elsa for another 5kms or so. I couldn’t turn down the chance to explore a new Park with friends, and so off we went for 11kms in Westmeath Provincial Park in the afternoon. It was a 50km long weekend! Here’s another thing: our newest horse was born at the end of May. He’s a bay colt by Sir Gregory out of the wonderfully calm Georgia (she is by Graf Grannus and out of Ehren’s mother Lucrezia). He went to the Hanoverian Breed Inspection on August 29 at Parkwood Stables in Guelph and I zipped down to see him go. Out of 28 beautiful foals, he was chosen as Hunter Champion of the day! Many thanks to breeder Sarah Harvey at CSF Farm for making yet another fantastic horse for me to dream about and play with. Sarah bred both Ludi and Ehren, and she has a few more youngsters for sale.
